The problem
When we hear the word trauma, we often think of major life events such as abuse, violence, accidents or significant loss.
But trauma isn't always obvious.
Sometimes, it comes from experiences that may have seemed small at the time. Being emotionally overlooked. Growing up feeling that your emotions didn't matter. Constant criticism. Rejection. Bullying. A difficult relationship. Loss, betrayal or separation.
There is no single way trauma shows up.
What matters is how those experiences affected you and the meaning you made from them.

T
Big T Trauma
Significant, life-altering experiences such as abuse, violence, serious accidents, major loss or other deeply distressing events.
t
Little t Trauma
Experiences that may not appear as dramatic but can still leave an emotional impact, particularly when they happen repeatedly or during important stages of development.
Sometimes we tell ourselves:
"It wasn't that bad."
"Other people had it worse."
"My childhood was fine."
An experience doesn't have to look dramatic from the outside to have affected the way you see yourself, your relationships or the world around you.

Recognise the patterns
Our experiences can influence the way we cope, communicate and respond to situations.
Overthinking
Expecting something to go wrong
Low self-worth
Expecting something to go wrong
Irritability
Becoming easily frustrated or defensive
Withdrawal
Shutting down or avoiding difficult conversations
People-pleasing
Struggling to say no or set boundaries
Relationship patterns
Repeating behaviours you don't fully understand
Coping behaviours
Using work, food, scrolling or other behaviours to escape difficult feelings
Sometimes, you know logically that a situation is safe, but your emotional response feels much stronger than the situation itself.
Coping mechanisms
Work harder
Stay busy
Avoid conflict
Shut down
Keep everyone happy
Push people away
Seek reassurance
Scroll or distract yourself
These patterns may have developed as ways of getting through difficult experiences.
What helped you cope at one point in your life may not always serve you in the same way today.
The first step isn't to judge yourself for these patterns. It's to understand them.

The problem
You finish work. You need a break...
But it never ends. Family responsibilities. Dinner. Dishes. Tidying up. Even when others are speaking to you, your mind is wandering. You don’t want to speak to anyone. You just want to relax and recover.
You do these things to switch off, but are you actually recovering?
Scrolling on your phone till late into the night
Binge watching to escape the feelings of loneliness and helplessness
It starts as just one drink/cigarette in the evening to take the edge off
Worrying about tomorrow before today has even finished
Lying in bed replaying upsetting conversations from the day
Relying on sleep aids/ medication to get your head to stop
Sleeping longer but waking up drained and in a bad mood
What other adverse habits do you rely on for a temporary respite?
Distraction may help you escape the stress temporarily, but it's addictive.
The constant stimulation has knock on effects, such as:
Reduced focus leading to mistakes or having to stay later at work
Even after a quiet weekend you dread Monday morning
A shorter fuse so disagreements end up escalating (especially at home)
Being constantly distracted leaving your family feeling neglected (or used)
Being absent-minded and forgetful leaving your partner upset
Work and home blurring into one long shift of never-ending tasks
The problem here is not the hectic lifestyle. You love your job, and you love your family; that's not going to change. So what do you need to navigate this lifestyle more smoothly?
Reset your nervous system with simple tools
Be more present with your family
Stay calm under pressure at work
Wake up with more energy and enthusiasm
Have more energy and focus to be more productive throughout the day
Feel more confident and less worried, at work and at home

Your workday ends, but your mind doesn't.
You find it hard to stop thinking about work.
You are constantly solving problems for other people.
You feel mentally overloaded even when you're physically resting.
You struggle to be fully present at home because your mind is elsewhere.

You have plenty of time and space to recover after demanding periods.
You're looking for a purely entertainment-focused night out.
You're looking for medical or psychological treatment.
